The Online Graduate Certificate in Academic Advising is designed for those wishing to enter the field of academic advising or those working in academic advising with a degree in another discipline.

For those with an undergraduate or graduate degree in another discipline, the certificate can provide a foundation in the theory and practice of advising.

Why Apply?

The advising certificate consists of 15 hours of required courses and electives. This fully online degree allows for flexibility and convenience to advance through the program at the student’s own pace and to accommodate the student’s schedule. 


The certificate program requires a minimum of 15 graduate credits comprised of 5 required courses.

Five Required Courses (15 credits)

  • EDA 6045 - College Student Development Theory
  • EDH 6041 - Foundations of Academic Advising
  • EDH 5400 - Counseling Skills for Higher Education Professionals
  • EDH 6943 - Practicum in Higher Education Administration*
  • EDH 6047 - College Student Life and Cultures
  • MHS 6428 - Cross Cultural Counseling

* EDH 6943 is required if student is not employed in academic advising or related field.



Admission Requirements

  • A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited university with a GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 credit hours of upper-division coursework.
  • Work-experience in higher education such as community college or student affairs is preferred but not required
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation
  • Personal Statement
  • Current Resume
  • Letters and any other supporting documents are to be submitted online to FIU's Graduate Admissions Office
